





4/26: Spirituals in Motion Song Creation Workshop with Sistah LaLa
The Spirituals in Motion Song Creation Workshop invites participants to engage in Lyric Writing and Arrangement of Traditional Negro Spirituals to create new work.
Sistah LaLa will begin with a presentation discussing the origin of a few popular Negro Spirituals, share an example of her work with Spirituals and how she was inspired to build a way to honor my Ancestors legacy and express her voice. Then participants will be invited to brainstorm concepts, work as single or multiple groups, select songs and accompaniment and finally, create new work.
This activity is perfect for multigenerational groups and looks to inspire creativity, merge history with the voices of today. This workshop is designed to educate, inspire and create long lasting impressions on individuals and communities.
The participant leaves with: knowledge about the Negro Spiritual examples of work songs; inspirational songs and contemplative songs: creative work to share with family and community.
Sistah LaLa is a Grammy Award-winning, classically trained Contralto known for her dynamic fusion of Roots n Soul, Jazz, Blues, and Hip-Hop. With over 35 years of experience performing in 40 countries and prestigious Opera Houses, she has built a remarkable career as Classical Vocalist and now continues her arc as a Singer-Songwriter. In addition to her performances, Sistah Lala is dedicated to honoring her heritage by arranging Traditional Spirituals and conducting workshops that uplift and highlight underrepresented stories in music.
